 | Aquashow, Elliott Murphy’s Debütalbum, wurde im November 1973 auf Polydor
veröffentlicht. Außergewöhnliche Reaktionen folgten auf dem Fuß, und Artikel erschienen in Rolling Stone,
Newsweek, The New Yorker und anderswo. Seine Musik wurde sowohl im Fernsehen als auch im Radio gespielt, und er wurde zum neuen Dylan gekrönt, zum neuen Lou Reed und zum F. Scott Fitzgerald des Rock’n’Roll. Aber wie so vielen neuen und echten Künstlern vergaßen die Medien, ihn so zu sehen, wie er war - als Elliott Murphy, und nicht wie irgendjemand. Was er war - und nach mehr als 25 Jahren noch immer ist - ist ein außergewöhnlicher Songwriter, ein aggressiver Sänger und ein talentierter Gitarrist; ein aufopfernder Musiker, immer “on the road”, der zu seiner eigenen musikalischen Vision seit nunmehr 17 Alben steht. Die mittlerweile zu Klassikern gewordenen Alben Lost Generation und Night Lights auf RCA folgten 1975 und 1976, Just A Story From America auf Columbia im Jahre 1977. 1980 veröffentlichte Murphy die 6-Song-EP Affairs auf seinem eigenen Label und begann, regelmäßig in Europa auf Tour zu gehen. “Ich wußte nicht, ob mich überhaupt jemand kannte,” sagt er rückblickend, “bis ich in Paris mein erstes Konzert gab und sechs Zugaben geben mußte.” Weitere Alben folgten: Murph The Surf (1982), Party Girls/Broken Poets (1984 - nominiert für einen New York Music Award) und 1986 das wuchtige Milwaukee, produziert vom ex-Talking Head Jerry Harrison, gefolgt von Change Will Come und 1989 von einem langerwarteten Livealbum, Hot Point, mit “special guest” Chris Spedding an der Leadgitarre. Nachdem er 1990 nach Paris gezogen war, veröffentlichte Murphy die sehr persönliche 24-Song-CD 12 (erschienen in den USA unter dem Titel Unreal City). Ständiges Interesse an seinen früheren Werken sorgten für insgesamt drei Best-Of-Compilations, Paris/New York, Diamonds By The Yard und erst kürzlich Going Through Something (78-92). Selling The Gold aus dem Jahr 1995 sah Murphy mit einem beeindruckenden neuen Team an Musikern: Andy Newmark (Roxy Music) am Schlagzeug; Chucho Merchan (Eurythmics) am Bass; Luis Jardim (Rolling Stones) an den Percussioninstrumenten und ganz speziellen Gästen wie Bruce Springsteen oder The Violent Femmes. Sein neuestes Album Beauregard markiert eine Rückkehr zu einem intimeren akustischen Sound und einer Band mit akustischen Gitarren, Bass, Mandoline, Violine und Schlagzeug. Es ist sein bisher provokativstes und lyrischstes Album, was Story-Songs wie “Sonny”, “Small Room” und “Somebodies Anniversaries” oder das radiofreundliche “Hard-Core” bestens demonstrieren. “Literatur ist meine Religion,” sagte Murphy kürzlich in einer TV-Show, “aber Rock’n’Roll ist meine Sucht.” Der kristallklare Sound des Albums, mit ein Verdienst des neuartigen HDCD-Masterings, orientiert sich vor allem auf Murphy’s unglaublich ausdrucksstarke Stimme, die sich im Laufe der Zeit nur in Charakter, Tiefe und Nuance verändert hat. Sowohl die langjährigen Fans als auch die “Neueinsteiger” in die Welt des Elliott Murphy werden Beauregard als ein vielschichtiges Werk anerkennen, welches zweifellos wiederholtes Anhören verdient. Heute lebt Elliott Murphy zusammen mit seiner Frau Francoise und seinem jungen Sohn Gaspard in Paris. Er tourt regelmäßig sowohl solo als auch mit Band, und neben seinem eindrucksvollen musikalischen Schaffen hat er Kurzgeschichten und einen Roman (Cold and Electric) in verschiedenen Sprachen veröffentlicht. 1973. Outstanding critical
response was immediate, and feature stories appeared in Rolling Stone, Newsweek, The New
Yorker and
elsewhere. His music received prominent coverage on TV and radio as he was crowned the new
Dylan, the
new Lou Reed and the F. Scott Fitzgerald of rock’n’roll. But as with so many new and genuine
artists the
media missed the point for Elliott Murphy was not the new anybody. What he was - and has
remained for over
twenty-five years - is an original songwriter, a compelling singer and a talented guitarist;
a dedicated touring
musician who has remained true to his own unique musical vision through 17 albums. The now classic Lost Generation and Night Lights followed on RCA in 1975 and 1976 and Just A Story From America for Columbia in 1977. In 1980 Murphy released the six-song E.P. Affairs on his own label and began touring regularly in Europe. “I didn’t know anyone knew who I was there,” he says in restrospect, “until I played my first concert in Paris and I got six encores.” More albums followed: Murph The Surf (1982), Party Girls/Broken Poets (1984 - nominated for a New York Music Award) and in 1986 the stunning Milwaukee produced by ex-Talking Heads’ Jerry Harrison, followed-up by Change Will Come and a long-awaited live album, Hot Point with special guest Chris Spedding on lead guitar in 1989. Following his move to Paris in 1990, Murphy released the intensely personal twenty-four song CD 12 (released in the US under the title Unreal City). Interest in his earlier work was rekindled, and three Best-of anthologies have appeared, Paris/New York, Diamonds By The Yard and most recently Going Through Something (78-92). 1995’s Selling The Gold saw Murphy with an impressive new team of musicians: Andy Newmark (Roxy Music) on drums; Chucho Merchan (Eurythmics) on bass; Luis Jardim (Rolling Stones) on percussion and special guests including Bruce Springsteen and The Violent Femmes. His latest album Beauregard (1998) marks a return to a more intimate acoustic sound featuring a tight combo of acoustic guitars, bass, mandolin, violin and drums. It is perhaps his most provocative and lyrical album to date as story-songs such as “Sonny”, “Small Room” and “Somebodies Anniversary” as well as the radio-friendly “Hard-Core” demonstrate so well. “Literature is my religion,” Murphy stated on a recent TV show. “But rock’n’roll is my addiction.” The sonic clarity of the album which utilized the state of the art HDCD mastering process finely focuses on Murphy’s incredibly expressive voice which has only gained in character, depth and nuance with the passage of time. Both the long time fan as well as the newcomer to the world of Elliott Murphy will appreciate Beauregard as an intense many layered work which deserves and will surely receive repeated listenings. Today, Elliott Murphy lives in Paris with his French wife, Francoise, and his young son, Gaspard. He tours constantly both solo and with band and aside from his impressive musical output he has had collections of short stories and a novel (Cold and Electric) published in various languages as well.
