 | (Rock/Roots Rock) 2011 Red House - grandios gelungenes Comeback der ehemaligen Bay Area Rock-Kultband nach vielen, vielen Jahren. Das letzte Studioalbum datiert von 1990, die kreative Hochphase des Ex-Jefferson Airplane-Ablegers befand sich zwischen 1970 und 77 mit den 8 klassischen, zum Teil epochalen LPs. Unzählige Live-Kopplungen gab es in der Folge obendrein. Hot Tuna waren und sind immer die Kernzelle Jorma Kaukonen & Jack Casady plus wechselnde Begleiter an Schlagzeug und anderen Instrumenten. Zwei Partner mit ungleicher Gewichtung: Casady ist "nur" Bassist, Kaukonen ist praktisch alles andere: komplettiert tätowierter Frontmann, kauzig-knarzig-verschrobener Sänger mit einer Stimme, die es so nicht noch einmal im gesamten Rock-Kosmos gibt, Komponist der eigenen Stücke, Ausnahmegitarrist, und zwar sowohl an elektrischen als auch akustischen Gitarren aller Art, Roots-Connoisseur mit ausgeprägtem Wissen und Geschmack. Und unablässig auch unter eigenem Namen unterwegs, zuletzt mit einer Serie von überragenden Alben für Red House: 'Stars In My Crown' (07) und 'River Of Time' (09). 'Steady As She Goes' ist nun "the best of both worlds": zum einen die allerdings wesentlich elektrischer rockende Fortsetzung der letzten Kaukonen-Alben und andererseits eine auf den heutigen Roots/Americana-Zeitgeist abgestimmte Neuorientierung des alten Hot Tuna-Spirits. So schließt sich dieser Kreis nach über 40 Jahren auf den Millimeter!! Hot Tuna 2011 sind ein Quartett, neben Kaukonen & Casady hören wir Skoota Warner als Drummer und den bekannten Picker Barry Mitterhoff an akustischer und elektrischer Mandoline. Für den Gesamtsound mitentscheidend ist der berühmte Produzent Larry Campbell, erster Haus- und Hofmusiker bei Levon Helm und allen jüngsten Recordings in seiner Scheune. Dort hat er auch diese Sessions aufgenommen und die Arrangements häufig um eigene Beiträge mit reichlich Gitarren, Pedal Steel, Geige und Orgel erweitert/verfeinert. Teresa Williams singt Harmony Vocals. Das ausführliche 12 Tracks-Programm umfasst einen tierischen Opener im J.J. Cale-Stil ('Angel Of Darkness'), einige neue Kaukonen-Songs, die beiden obligatorischen Country Blues-Nummern von Rev. Gary Davis, ein paar Coverstücke sowie ein beherztes Remake des eigenen Hits 'Easy Now' von 1974. |

Recorded at Levon Helm's studio and produced by Grammy-winning producer Larry Campbell, the album captures the energy of their live performances with Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin, drummer Skoota Warner (Cyndi Lauper, Matisyahu, Santana) as well as Campbell joining them on guitar, fiddle, organ and vocals.
With their amps turned up to eleven, Hot Tuna rips into the blistering opener "Angel of Darkness" and puts the wind in your sails with the `hop on your Harley and take to the road' free-spirit jams like "Easy Now Revisited" and "A Little Faster." Steady As She Goes tastefully mixes in the acoustic side of Tuna with folk tunes like the moving "What Might Have Been" and the reflective "Second Chances." Along with masterful covers of the blues-rock infused "If This is Love" and a funky rendition of Reverend Gary Davis' "Children of Zion" Steady As She Goes is an iconic record that Hot Tuna fans have been waiting for! |
